An Indianapolis Summer Family Photography Session
From Baby to One Year old: Photographing Milestones for Indianapolis Families
Several years ago an email landed in my inbox from Rachael. She and Jay were inquiring about a couples session and had recently purchased a home. Photographing this couple was a delight from the get-go! Jay and Rachael’s first photography session with me was at Eagle Creek Park in Indianapolis (special to them because of Jay’s family’s connection there).
After they became engaged, I was honored to photograph their elopement as they celebrated with close family in Indy. The following year, little Isla was born and I was over the moon to photograph her newborn session!
Needless to say, I’ve been overjoyed to be able document their family’s precious milestones. It’s so obvious how much they love their little Isla! Time has flown and now she is almost one year old! Having the privilege of watching babies grow up, and walking alongside mamas is one of the best parts of my job. Photographing their session in a field seemed so fitting (a full circle moment!) as I reflected on all of the fun I’ve had photographing them over the years!
What to Wear: Styling your Indianapolis Family Photography Session
I have to say, Rachael always does a marvelous job selecting outfits for their family photos. So, I thought it might be neat to highlight a couple of tips based upon the outfit formula seen here in these family photos!
There are many different types of styles of family photography, and many family photographers in Indianapolis. If you’re looking for a bright, timeless, film-like style you’re in the right place!
The colors you choose for your family’s wardrobe have a significant impact on the overall look of your photos. Since I have a light, bright, organic style I always suggest choosing a color palette that keeps things simple and keeps the focus on the family members in the photographs.
Note in their photos, for their family of three, Rachael chose two solids and one pattern. The pattern is soft and is neutral in color (this is key) and doesn’t distract but adds visual interest. The front of Isla’s dress as well as Rachael’s dress has texture with the smocking. Rachael mentioned that she purchased Isla’s dress at Hey Little Diddle (a super cute Indianapolis Children’s Boutique!).
Jay’s shirt has a good texture as well. It is not shiny but more like a cotton or linen look! His khakis blend well with the colors of Rachael’s dress, but do not match in color. This is a great example of coordinating with a similar look (neither is too formal or casual for the other person) while steering clear of “matching” exactly. If pastel’s aren’t your favorite, stick with more neutrals and swap the pink for a soft muted color or jewel tone.
It’s been so fun documenting so many beautiful memories for this lovely little family. I’m so blessed to have such sweet, kind clients and cannot wait to see them walk this journey of parenthood as they move toward the toddler years! Enjoy this glimpse into my time with the Wolverton family.
